The chain is the most important part of the mountain bike drive system. Of course, the chain also has a service life. If the maintenance is not good, it will not only shorten its service life but also affect the smoothness of riding. So how long is the service life of the chain under normal circumstances?
If it is just an ordinary leisure ride, there is no need to replace it within 30,000 kilometers. If it is the kind of high-intensity riding, like climbing or something, it is estimated that it needs to be replaced within 5000 kilometers. Today we are not talking about the service life of the chain, but the daily maintenance.
After riding the bike for a long time, the chain will make a rattling noise, and the riding is also very laborious and not smooth. This is the symptom of a lack of oil in the chain. If you continue to ride, it will cause unnecessary damage to the chain and shorten the service life. At this point, the necessary maintenance is required.

First, use a rag to remove the oil and dirt from the chain. If necessary, use a toothbrush to clean the gaps between the chain and the links. Also clean the front derailleur and rear derailleur pulleys, as well as the dirt on the flying wheel and ring gear.
When cleaning, if you need water, it is best to use warm water. Remember not to use strong acid or strong alkaline cleaners. Because these things will damage and corrode the surface of the chain, although nothing can be seen in a short time. After cleaning, remember to dry the chain completely with an air gun.
Before lubricating, make sure the chain is clean and dry. Put the oil spout on the chain, turn the wheel, and evenly lubricate the chain. After one full turn, start changing gears and run all gears once. The purpose is to fully lubricate the fittings that the chain runs on.
Find a clean and dry rag. Wrap one piece of the chain, hold it in your hand, and turn the chain. The purpose is to wipe off the excess oil on the surface of the chain. If there is excess oil, it will stick to dust during the riding process, slowly form dirt, and affect the smoothness of riding.
This maintenance is basically carried out once a month. If you have ridden on rainy or muddy roads, this interval should be shortened accordingly.
