These Parts of Mountain Bikes Need to Be Replaced in Time

If we ride for a period of time every day, after a year, our mountain bike wear and tear reaches a certain level, which will affect our riding experience. There are a lot of mountain bike parts that we need to replace when it’s time to retire. For example, the most common consumables: tires, brakes, etc. require frequent maintenance and replacement.

First look at tires, as an important source of contact between mountain bikes and ground contact, the state of tires and our riding experience are inseparable truths. Under normal circumstances, in terms of our daily riding clock in, although the riding frequency is relatively high, the number of kilometers per ride is very low. With such a loss of progress, a new tire needs to be replaced in about two and a half years. Another situation is to look at the surface of the outer tire. If there are cracks on the surface, it can also indicate that the inner tube needs to be replaced.

Then there is the chain. The chain is the key chain connecting the flywheel and the chainring. The importance of the chain is self-evident. Usually, the life of the chain is longer than the life of the tire, of course, if it is normal wear and tear. There is a clear sign that the chain is stretched, which means that the life of the chain is over. The elongation of the chain will affect the speed change and transmission efficiency of the vehicle, and it will also increase the risk of chain loss, so we need to replace the chain in time. To detect whether the chain is elongated, a chain caliper is required. When the two ends of the chain caliper completely enter between the chains, it means that the chain has to be replaced.

Next is the brake block of our mountain bike. Mountain bikes generally have disc brakes. We can confirm the degree of wear on the brake pads by removing the brake pads and detecting the thickness of the brake pads. The thickness of the new disc brake pads is about 3mm, and when the thickness of the brake pads shrinks to 1mm due to wear, the disc brakes will stop working, thus causing unnecessary danger. Therefore, when we find that the disc brake pads are thinner, we should replace the brake pads as soon as possible.

There is also the line pipe, the line pipe is connected to the gear shift and brake, and they cannot be separated. Good-condition line pipes make shifting smooth and precise, and you can feel better when braking. Generally speaking, if we are riding more than three days a week, the line pipe should be replaced once a year. When we have an obvious sense of blockage when using the line pipe, it also means that the line pipe needs to be replaced. If it is found that there is obvious rust on the line pipe, it is also necessary to replace the line pipe.

Finally, there are the chainring and the flywheel. These are parts with a relatively long life, but no matter how long the life is, they will also wear out. If the loss is serious, it will also affect the life of the chain. If we find that the cassette sprockets/chainring block has become significantly pointed, it means that they need to be replaced.
